Determines the water quality by it's colour.(water quality series - 2).

Hello everyone:
Today we will see about the different water colours behind the pond production.

We already see in detail about temperature in shrimp pond. Now various techniques developed for doing shrimp farming. Intensive and super intensive farming system does not depends on primary production.
But.. in earthern pond, we partly depends on the primary productivity. In final production, we calculated FCR in the pond. At this calculation we can't note or mention, how much feed contributed by planktons.
If you are preparing the pond, then do one thing( after water filling).
* Take white bucket.
* Fill the bucket with water.
* Note the colour of your pond water, not during heavy sunlight.
* Daily do this and see the difference in your pond productivity.

The colour of your water is mainly due to the present of amount of total dissolved and total suspended solids present in your pond.

Total dissolved solids ( organic matters , minerals and gases ).
Total suspended solids ( planktons and detritus, humus, and clay particles which is present in pond).

Did you know?
If your pond have high turbidity, then it will causes major problems it prevents the penetration of light and leads to deficiency of oxygen at bottom and leads to anoxic conditions and leads production of toxic gases in your pond ecosystem.

Light green colour:
All are know about this colour. Most of the ponds in earthern culture will be in this colour. It is mostly occured in the ponds with low organic sediments. If you are preparing the new pond with no organic residues then you will get this colour. This colour is mainly due to green algae like chlorella etc.. This Condition is somewhat good in aquaculture.

Golden brown colour:
It is mainly due to the presence of diatoms in the pond ecosystem. It is a good condition and usually it occurs in presence of some organic matters. If we leave the excess organic matter ,then it affects the pond ecosystem. It is mostly occurs in lower temperature.

Did you note that in your pond?

There some other reason for pond get brownish at lower temperature. It may be due to diatoms or due to excess suspended solids in the pond. If any rain occurs, this runoff also causes increasing suspended solids and looks some turbidity.

Dark green colour:
Sure, it occurs by the presence of bluegreen algae. In my blog, I posted details about bluegreen algae. It's looks like paint in the upper region. It prevents the growth of other planktons and affect the pond ecosystem by producing toxins. If you are doing shrimp farming in low saline water, if BGA present in your pond then it will leads to soft shell syndrome and also many infection will come.

Dark brown:
If your pond have lots of undegraded organic matter, then it leads to eutrophication. In this presence of excess organic matter there is a chance for growth of dinoflagellates. The organic matters contains various elements like dead matters, weak acids and pigments. It also chance for the dark brown colour. At that time you have to check water quality especially Total Ammonia in your pond.

Yellowish colour:
Anyone noticed this colour. Yes, if you are not treating are culture the ponds for so many months then it causes like this colour. Automatically we can tell that ,it is aged pond and due to growth of chrysophyta.. in this chance for occurance of organic acids.

Foggy white water:
It is mainly due to the presence of zooplanktons and turbid matters like clay, silt and detritus which present in your pond. Some times you can see at the corner of the ponds. Every crash there is big process will going to happen on pond bottom. If you saw any crash symptoms, immediately increases bottom probiotics and give extra DO tablets at night time.

If you saw some water remains transparent for so many days, there is a chance for presence of heavy metals and lack of nutrients in pond.

Ammonium salts(promotes) - green algae.
Urea (promotes )- diatoms.

After preparation, if you are not satisfied with the pond colour then you can add special minerals for plankton development.

If your water have iron then it shows in red colour.
If your pond have high manganese then cause black in colour.
Yellow or dark brown is mainly due to the presence of organic matters.

We must take care of pond with maintain productivity. If waste is high then automatically blooms comes.

                   Thank you 😊.
