Importance of nitrate and silicates for the growth of diatoms in aquaculture ponds.

    Today we will see about importance of nitrate and silicates for the growth of diatoms. 

Diatoms are mostly found in saline water. This diatoms plays important role in food web as a primary producers. 

These diatoms also found an important food source for culture species in aquaculture.

Source of nitrate:
   During shrimp farming,we can observe there will be a shifting in plankton biomass from day to day. But the most important species occupied in later stage is bluegreen algae. 
   This bluegreen algae is controlled by various method,  lowering pH of the pond by increasing bacterial population. 
    Trapping availability of phosphorus in bottom soil by applying various chemicals. 
   In this, nitrate is an source which is naturally available in pond using high nitritious feed for culture. 

Source of silicates:
     Source of silicate is depleted in natural waters. It is most abundantly present in soil and absorbed by plants and again get into soil after decaying of plants. These silicates playing major role in formation of cell wall for diatoms. There are various commercial fertilizer available to increase silicates. 

These nitrate and silicates composition plays an important role in biomass, reproduction, biochemical composition, stress tolerance of diatoms species. 

The study shows when the medium is depleted with nitrate content then there is a decrease in protein percent in the diatoms. 

Depletion in silicates limits the biomass production and chlorophyll content in diatoms. It also affects the cell population and carrying capacity. 

Depletion in nitrogen compounds leads to decrease in chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll is an important factor for converting energy. 
During depletion of nitrogen, it can't able to generate chlorophyll because it is unable to utilize intracellular nitrogen. 

Depletion in silicate concentration affects the lipid concentration in diatoms. It affects the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as EPA and DHA in diatoms. 

Likewise these nutrients plays an important role in the maintaining of diatoms population in pond system. 

Mainatanence of diatoms is possible by various factor. We have to maintain nitrogen, phosphorous, silicates ratio in an even manner. Salinity, temperature also plays important role in productivity.

Shrimp eats more copepods which is present in the pond.       In last blog, I told about the reactions and preparation of fermented juice using organic substrates.
