Important of azolla in aquaculture

 Hlo everyone;

       I am P.Dhivagar completed Bachelor of fisheries science. Now I working as a Technical executive. Today I am going to share about important of azolla in aquaculture.

Azolla:

   It is a floating aquatic weed having high amount of crude protein upto 25% in dry weight based on environment it may changes.

   It has special capacity of fixing atmospheric nitrogen with the help of blue green algae Anabena azollae. 

   Due it's nutrient availability it is used as feed for fish, poultry, pigs and cattles. We can reduce the feed cost by using azolla as a supplement feed.

   6 different species available around the world. In India Azolla pinnata is widely spreaded.

Experiments:

   Different researches conducted on developing azolla meal as a substitute for fish meal. Is it possible?

     Yes,i is possible.

  Some of the researches told we can use 15% of azolla meal as a substitute for fish meal in GIFT farming, it gives good FCR and Survival.we will discuss about another researches in next blog.

  Importance of azolla in fish cum pig integrated farming:(Research from kvk India )

   In normally every farmer done pig cum integrated farming in a same way. But there is another , many of them don't know.

In generally farmers have growout for pig, the pig wastes is pumped into fish pond.

         Feed-Pig-wastes-Fish pond-Harvest.

But if we use azolla as a biodigester in this we can reduce pig feed upto 20% and without supplement feed we can yield 10-20% more fishes per ha.

 Azolla-pig-pig waste-azolla as a digester of pig waste -wastes into fish pond.

In this ,the wastes from pig is digested by azolla, the azolla fixes atmospheric nitrogen and increase the growth of heterotrophic bacteria in that pig waste . After we put the waste into fish pond , it act as a both fertilizer and heterotrophic bacteria gives good environment condition.

Some other different farming methods increases in nowadays. For growout of carp culture we can use azolla as a feed for rohu, grass carps and tilapia. Some Farmera done culture of murrel and seabass in different manner.

Azolla- Tilapia- seabass or Murrel. By this method also we reduce feed cost in our farm.
