A common parasitic disease which cause problem in carp farming - Fish lice ( argulus sp).

Hello everyone:
Today we will see about the common parasite infection fish lice which is caused by argulus species.

Carp farming:
Polyculture of carps is common in all over India. Different species, different feeds, different environmental parameters causes various problems in aquaculture sector.

Fish lice :
It is a parasitic infection which is caused by argulus species. Argulus is a crustacean parasite which undergoes different lifestages. This parasite attached to the skin and scales of the fish and continually sucks the tissues and blood from host body.
It gives more irritation to the fish. It causes wound and leads to secondary bacterial and viral infections.

Life stages:
Argulus species like Argulus stamensis, Argulus japonicus are mostly causes secondary infection to the host.

                         Argulus
           Attached to the host body
                  Develop into adult
                           Eggs
                     Metanauplii

In this, adult can freely swims into water without host for more than 5 days.
But the hatched metanauplii can swims freely into water upto 2 to 3 days without host.

Severity of infection:
Initially the affected numbers will be very low. If you find any single fish affected with this infection, you have to immediately take an action.
It will spread into other fishes rapidly and causes secondary infection and mortality.
Some researchers find, they also leads to cause some viral disease as an secondary infection.

Prevention:
Proper drying of pond is important before stocking.
Liming the pond is necessary to prevent and kills the dormant eggs and other infectious agents.
Proper sampling of fishes. We have to check the animal health and check the signs of disease at regular intervals.
Proper selection of seed for stocking.

It spreds very fast to the adjacent ponds.

Signs:
The affected animal shows lethargic and shows irregular swimming. You can able to see the parasite visually.
There are various commercial medicines available to cure and prevent the disease.
                           Thank you🙏.

Best stocking densities for polyculture of carps.

Hello everyone:
Today we will see about the optimum stocking ratios of IMC and CMC in polyculture.

1. Species selection:
Select the species which have high local market price in your area. If I select catla, rohu, grass carp, common carp then we have to fix the ratio of stocking.

2. Are you able to do supplement feeding?
We have to fix the stocking densities based on this question also.

If your pond have more organic matter or you are using more organic manure in your pond? Then you can stock Common carp and mrigal Or tilapia in 30-40%.
If you are stocking grass carp and rohu in high numbers, the wastes of herbivores can be easily digested by common carp.
Silver carp is very useful to control algal blooms and reduce the oxygen depletion during night times.
Catla with 10-15% , rohu with 30-40%, mrigal 10-20%, grass carp 10-20% and rest of common carp is preferable. Most of the places silver carp not have sufficient market value and consumers.
Based on the pond conditions and species we can change the ratios.
                         Thank you.

How to select a perfect site for vannamei farming?

Hello everyone:
Today we will see about different ways to select an perfect site for vannamei farming.

This blog will help for beginners for selecting site.

* P.vannamei is commonly cultured around the world due to its adaptability and growth.
* Most of the persons showing intrest to do farming.

Some of the common questions to select an better site.

1. Select the species for culture.
If I selecting p.vannamei , then I have to select saline water area for better performance.
2. Soil texture and soil type ( clayey sandy or clayey loamy soil better for maintaining good primary productivity)
3. Better to avoid sandy sites. (Problems occurs by turbidity, problems in nutrient storage etc..)
4. If it is coastal area, we have to analyse about high tide in that region.
5. Locate the best water sources and analyse water quality. If using sea water, better to check bacterial loads at regular intervals.
6. If you are using bore water, the checking of water quality at regular interval is important.
7. Analyse previous climatic conditions. If you are doing more than two crops per year, then analyse better period with good weather conditions for crop.
8. Region wise culture results?
9. For vannamei, it is better to select site with more than 15 ppt salinity.
10.Checking of soil quality like soil organic carbon, checking for nutrients.
11. Better to take more than 4 to 6 samples from specific area.
12. Field physical test to analyse the type of soil.
13. Transportation, current, feeder canal are very important.
If it is sea water, then filter can be used.
14. Land must not more steeper than surroundings.

 For lease ponds...
1. Check for embankment condition.
2. Visual observation for presence of black soil and organic matter.
3. Age of the pond?
4. How many crops are done?
5. Status of previous crops?
6. If it is diseases means, then analyse what is the type of disease?
7. Status of adjacent pond culture?
8. Status of seepage in pond?
9. Checking for water quality?
10. Checking for water exchange facility.
11. Most faced problems on previous crops like turbidity, seepage.
12. Check for generators, feed storage, current facility....

Each of the above mentioned conditions are very important. There is a very broad answers behind every questions. Contact for farming related queries.

There are many minute things we have to consider during site selection. The pond is one of the basic element to determine the success of crop.
                         Thank you🙏.

Must needed pond in farm - ETP.

Hello everyone :
Today we will see about effluent treatment pond management and it's need.

What is the need?
Direct pumping of waste water into outside will causes,
* Environmental issues like Eutropication, accumulation of excessive organic load, which affects production and life of essential primary producers.
* It creates BOD, COD problems which affects the growth of other aquactic organism in creek or river.
* If you used any chemicals, then discharge of this water affects the water quality.

We can tell many environment issues.......

* Disease prevalence.
* Untreated discharge of water into outside will be the root cause of disease prevalence. It affects other farms also.

ETP will helps you..

ETP to farmers: Hi, I am ETP pond, pls construct me 🙂 in your site.

Farmer to ETP pond: why? Why I have to construct?

ETP to farmers : I will give you money from your farm waste.

Farmer to ETP : what? 😳 How?

ETP to farmer : Pls read below and share this blog to your contacts who have interested in aquaculture 🙃.

For all sites it is impossible to construct because most of the farmers are farmed in leased pond and have small area for farming. But they can maintain in a small setup.

Different stages :
The waste water have more nutrients and lots of suspended solids, decaying organic wastes, debris etc.. Will be present.

First choice of preference:
Culturing of aquatic organisms tilapia and bivalves. The filter feeders organisms shows good growth on that waste water.

Next...
Preparation of settlementation tank. This tank settles suspended solid particles on that water and removes maximum of 50-80%.
Then, that water must be digested Aerobicaly and Anaerobicaly. The waste from aerobic and anaerobic organisms must be utilized routinely by using alternative digestion.
Aeration at the bottom to increase biological digestion and oxidation.
Nitrifiers plays an important role in this biological digestion.
Then the water can be used for another culture.

Various technologies like UV rays, Fractionation are available. But it will not economically feasible for an farmer.

ETP pond will give you good results by culturing tilapia and bivalves.

Try to construct at least small ETP pond in your site.
