Importance of potassium in low saline shrimp farming.

Hello everyone:         Most of us doing shrimp farming in low saline water only... Right?         P.vannamei has tolerance capacity for wide range of salinities. So it is easy for doing in low saline water.        In my blog, I posted about advantages and disadvantages of culture in low saline water.. in this major disadvantage is deficient of mineral. .        If one region have salinity of 5 ppt then other region also have the same salinity means , we can't able to tell, both of water have same ionic composition... It changes based on places, region..... Minerals :            Some of major minerals are very important for the shrimp growth and survival. Ca, Mg, Na, k, Cl. On these important minerals, Most of us faces the potassium deficiency in water. Next Magnesium is deficient in most of the region... Based on ionic analysis of water, you have to add minerals to your water... Some of trace Minerals also must be present in pond. In this we can see only about major minerals. * I

Importance of BKC in Aquaculture ponds.

Hello everyone:     If you are in the field of Aquaculture, then you heard the use of BKC in fish and shrimp ponds. BKC is an strong disinfectant .      It is an non alcoholic disinfectant. BKC :      Benzalkonium chloride. It have Ammonium ions and it is an Quaternary ammonium compound. If your pond have heavy algal blooms or your pond having excess organic matter, at that time we can use BKC in pond. If you are not using probiotics for many days in pond then it will leads to growth of harmful microorganisms in pond. At that time you can give BKC against bacteria, fungus that present in your pond.  How BKC works on pond?      It is an disinfectant and act against bacteria that present in pond. It also works against fungus, virus. It also treated against bacterial infection. It have an amphiphilic property which means it contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions. Hydrophilic - attracts with water. Hydrophobic - repels against water. Example : Detergents - It also having amphi

Importance of soil organic carbon in shrimp farming.

Hello everyone:       Today we will see about some important topic related to soil quality.        How many of you check your soil organic carbon content before starting the culture?     I think, most of us not seeing and not following any procedures..liming, water filling, juice application these only happens very commonly..... Soil organic carbon:       If you knew the importance of soil organic carbon in shrimp culture, then you will definitely check this parameter before stocking...       First I would like tell about two types of soil called organic and mineral soil.. Organic soil - It contains more than 20 % of organic matter. Mineral soil - It contains less than 20% of organic matter.   Where the organic carbon present?           The organic carbon is present in the organic matter of your pond. If your pond is newly constructed means , it have only little amount of organic matter... If it is aged pond means then it have large amount of organic matter and organic carbon also. 40

Importance of carotenoids in shrimp growth.

Hello everyone:        Today we will see about importance of carotenoids in shrimp diet. I already told, we are not culturing our shrimp in their original environment and culture also depends on artificial diets. So we must ensure to provide sufficient amount of all nutrients in shrimp diet. Carotenoids :         All are heard about the pigments. It is a colour causing pigments. In shrimp body, some of pigment containing chromatophores cells are present. They are serve as pigment reserve. The physical attractiveness of shrimp is depends on the presence of pigments in their body. It is present in various colours. Shrimps are not able synthesize pigments but it can produce pigments from others.          If shrimp eats natural algae means, it can get all essential pigments from this algae. Example: some microalgae like Haematococcus pluvialis have high amount of astaxanthin. Dunaliella Salina have high beta carotene.   Carotenoids - 1.carotene ( oxygen free molecules) Carotenoids conta

Why vitamin C is mainly used during the culture of shrimp?

Hello everyone:         Today we will see the important antioxidant which is included with diets during the culture days....   Essential :         Always keep this in mind... We are not culturing the shrimp in their natural environment. We are culturing in high stocking densities compares to its natural environment.... So the needs for essential nutrients also high... If your culture depends on the natural production means then no problem for high use of additive compounds to the culture.. most of us only depends on the artificial feeds.       Make sure the feed we using must be in high quality. Many basic rules are their to check feed quality. I will post about how to check this quality by physically.. poor feed quality leads to lost of culture. Improper storage leads to rancidity, if you use that racid feed to your shrimp then it will damage the shrimp tissues... Be aware and careful of using and choosing feed.. Vitamins :    We all know vitamins divide into water soluble and fat so

Better clarification about pH and Alkalinity in shrimp pond. Water quality series -3

Image
Hello everyone:     Most of us confused between pH and alkalinity in the pond ecosystem. If there is low concentration of pH and alkalinity means we can increase but if there is high pH and alkalinity means it is some difficult to reduce .           pH and Alkalinity are related but different. pH and Alkalinity:       If you have shrimp pond then you definitely know the variance of pH in the water. You want to know means , you can check 4 to 5 times in a day. you must saw the pH fluctuations. Yes, pH is very important factor determines the shrimp culture. based on the level of pH you can tell , what happening in your shrimp pond.       Fluctuations of pH is mainly determined by amount of carbon dioxide in your pond water. Other factors like soil pH, soil deposits like calcium carbonate, planktons density also determines the changes of pH in your water.   pH :       I am also tell the same meaning, pH is determined by hydrogen ion concentration.             pH low - high hydrogen

Determines the water quality by it's colour.(water quality series - 2).

Hello everyone:   Today we will see about the different water colours behind the pond production. We already see in detail about temperature in shrimp pond. Now various techniques developed for doing shrimp farming. Intensive and super intensive farming system does not depends on primary production.         But.. in earthern pond, we partly depends on the primary productivity . In final production, we calculated FCR in the pond. At this calculation we can't note or mention, how much feed contributed by planktons.          If you are preparing the pond, then do one thing( after water filling). * Take white bucket. * Fill the bucket with water. * Note the colour of your pond water, not during heavy sunlight. * Daily do this and see the difference in your pond productivity. The colour of your water is mainly due to the present of amount of total dissolved and total suspended solids present in your pond. Total dissolved solids ( organic matters , minerals and gases ).

Small experiment on DO tablets.

Image
Hello everyone:       Today I will tell small experiment on DO tablets. Just you could learn about the efficiency of DO tablets.         I humbly request to the shrimp farmers who reading this blog. Pls use real time meters for DO and pH . Yes, meters will give good and accurate results. Sometimes kits showing wrong results which affects the health of shrimp culture. If possible means buy meters for DO and pH . Also better to make small titration setup for Alkalinity and Hardness. You can make small place for this setup in your big farm.           Yes, most of the persons doing take the sample and send to lab. It will take some minutes and may cause the chance for changing original water quality. Make sure to see the water quality at the spot of farm. It gives good results 👍.   Are you using DO tablets at night time? Are you thing about how much oxygen level will increase after tablets application? Most of the persons use DO tablets at night time. It is a temporary one. I

How temperature plays major role in shrimp farming.(Water quality series - 1)

Hello everyone:      Today we will see the importance of temperature in shrimp culture. What are the problems will come due to the temperature variance in shrimp pond.      Most of the persons who doing shrimp farm must know about the things what happened during temperature Change.       Shrimp grows very fastly, but we can't culture throughout the year. Why?     If you are doing intensive or super intensive system means no problem. But you are doing the culture of shrimp on outside means you have to fix the culture days based on climate change(keep in mind). Ok let's jump into topic. Temperature :       Most of the farmers doing in outer earthern pond. So in these situations, temperature plays important role in growth of our shrimp. We all focus only on ammonia, nitrite, H2S, but indirectly temperature plays very crucial role.         Heat is produced in water due to sunlight. Because sunlight have some energy in the form of photons , when it comes to contact with

How copepods develops in shrimp pond after applying fermented juice?

Image
Hello everyone:      Are you know which is shrimp favourite food in zooplanktons? Yes, it is copepods. Shrimp eats more copepods which is present in the pond.       In last blog, I told about the reactions and preparation of fermented juice using organic substrates. It is the continuation of that blog. In this I will tell about how zooplanktons(especially copepods) developed after fermented juice application. Main purpose of fermented juice in shrimp pond:      Increase the beneficial microbial colonies by fermentation and produce various substances which is beneficial for beneficial organism growth. After application, it will forms the microbial proteins in the water column. It serve as a natural food for shrimp at stocking time.     Initially, we have to give some natural live feeds because it increases the strength and natural immune system of the Shrimp. So only we prepared for development of zooplanktons in the pond.   What are planktons?         Phytoplankton and Zoo
